... And The Winner Is...

A Chance to Shine

Our students never cease to amaze us! Here at Jean Madeline Aveda Institute, we know that giving them the chance to stretch their creative muscles also means challenging them to do what maybe they didn't think they were capable of doing. But we believe in them and in our time-tested curriculum to give them to the skills to master the basics of hair, makeup, and even nails.

Sharing the Spotlight

We recently held a contest asking our students to create a time-lapse how-to video for the Halloween look of their choice. In this day and age, beauty professionals need to be able to utilize social media channels to their advantage. Videos on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram are instrumental nowadays to capturing the attention of potential customers or to even build your own beauty brand. We created this video contest challenge with this in mind so our students can learn how to take advantage of video on social media and share what they are learning in beauty school. These videos can help them know how to spread their talents, get their name out there, and maybe even build their own business one day.

And Our Winner Is...

We are proud of the creativity our students continue to share with us each day and we were blown away but what they created. We'd like to thank all of the students who entered this contest and would like to encourage all of our students to participate in future contests. We love to see your talent!

Without further ado, the winner of this year's "Halloween Look Video Challenge" is Allie.

An Interview with Our Winner

Allie is a cosmetology student at our campus in Neshaminy Mall. We sat down with her to get more info about why she took on this challenge, what inspires her, and what she loved most about this contest.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your inspiration for this look?

A: I have been following Glam&Gore for years on YouTube. She is also from Philly and does special effects makeup videos.

Q: Can you tell us about your process?

A: I just kinda had an idea in my head. I gathered up all the products and a mirror and put them on my dining room table, then just started filming. I have never tried SFX [special effects] before but I always wanted to try it.

Q: What was the biggest challenge?

A: Waiting for the latex to dry in between takes. I had to wait two hours between takes and I couldn't eat or drink anything and it took forever! I had to breathe through my nose the whole time. Editing was the hardest part. This was my first time ever doing SFX and first time ever editing a video.

Q: What was your favorite part?

A: Just sitting down and actually making the video. I loved having this chance to do SFX, which is rare.

Q: What are your career goals in beauty?

A: I want to do hair. But I would like to be doing SFX during Halloween season.

In talking with Allie, we can feel her passion for beauty and the fear she had in trying out some things that are new. But, we are proud that she decided to take on this fun challenge and loved that she surprised herself. She said about conquering this fear, “I knew that even if I didn't win, I felt that this was a valuable learning opportunity.”

Way to go, Allie!

Coming in second place we have Alexx from our University City campus with her devil-inspired makeup.
