During the month of January, our cosmetology students had the chance to enter our second ever “Beauty Influencer Contest”, this time with a Valentine’s theme. The one that we had last year was Halloween themed, and it was so popular that we simply had to hold another contest! The theme for this contest was centered on eye-catching date night looks for Valentine’s Day, and our students had us at “Hello!”! It’s always such a challenge for us to pick a single winner because our students always do such impressive work. This competition had an extra challenge that was not in the previous competition: our students had to create their looks on models, not on themselves. The students had to work to coordinate schedules with models and complete their looks in a limited amount of time, making this competition a real challenge!
Cosmetology doesn’t change much over time, but some of the challenges that modern cosmetologists have to face are completely new. For example, building a successful book of business as a hairstylist was entirely dependent on referrals, word of mouth, business cards, and other promotions. Now, cosmetologists have the opportunity to market themselves online, and one of the best ways to do that is by becoming a beauty influencer. Influencers are on many platforms and can have any amount of followers in order to make an impression and even gain clients. This is why we want our students to start practicing their social media game while they’re in school. In addition to the exciting prizes the participants can win, the big incentive for students to participate is get a little bit of real life exposure. The winning students have their work showcased on Jean Madeline Aveda Institute social media to help give them a boost! It’s a small taste of the amazing things they can do in their careers.
Remember how challenging we said it was to coordinate with models and get looks done under a time constraint? Alexx totally blew us away by completing looks on four models instead of just the required one! She showcases a wide range of skills by completing a natural look, a retro 1920s look, and a couple playful looks with additional Valentine’s-inspired makeup art. All of these things together are why we selected Alexx as our winner for this competition!
Bailey brought a perfect, natural makeup look to the competition. The combination of beautifully curled hair and sharp, winged eyeliner brought her model’s finished look together very nicely. Getting all dolled up for Valentine’s Day looks easy after watching Bailey’s work!
Angelice took a modern, colorful, and trendy approach to her date night look. Her model sported gorgeous magenta eyeshadow with a cute pink highlight to draw attention to the eye. Angelice then straightened the model’s hair to bring the entire look together into a clean, sophisticated hairstyle that really impressed us!
Amatulilah brought us the most romantic and fiery look of the ones we got to see. She applied matching eyeshadow and lipstick to bring out the model’s features and give her an alluring look that we fell in love with at first glance. Amatulilah finished off the look with gorgeous curled hair and a rose to bring everything together. Her work is amazing!
