How to Become an Esthetician in PA

Potential students often ask us about the process of becoming an esthetician in Pennsylvania. If you're wondering what is required, here are all the steps to take.

1. Do your research.

Look at the different beauty schools around you. Which schools are nearby? Which schools have a good reputation? Are you willing to travel or move to attend beauty school? Where will you find the best opportunities? Once you've done your personal research you should have a couple of schools in mind that you'd like to tour. You should schedule a tour with the admissions team of each school you're interested in.

2. Tour a school.

Most beauty schools have wonderful staff who are very friendly and helpful when it comes to taking tours. They will help you get to know the school, show you around the facilities, and answer your questions. Some important questions you should ask during your tour include:

  • Which programs are available?
  • What type of curriculum do you use?
  • Who will be teaching me?
  • How much is tuition?
  • Do you offer tuition assistance?
  • Can I visit the salon?
  • Can I watch the current students practice?
  • How long is the program?
  • Do you offer job placement assistance?

3. Complete the required coursework.

In Pennsylvania you need to complete 300 hours of coursework in order to qualify for the Pennsylvania state board exam. Here at Jean Madeline Aveda Institute, we offer esthetics courses in multiple locations that meet this requirement. Our University City campus offers an evening schedule that can be completed in as little as 17 weeks, and our Queen Village location offers a daytime schedule that can be completed in as little as 3 months. You can choose a school based on which schedule works best for you!

4. Pass a state licensure exam.

In Pennsylvania you can start the application process for your license here. Once you apply, you should receive an Examination Approval Letter from the Board of Cosmetology. This letter will walk you through the required steps to take your exam. The exam will test you on your knowledge of:

  • Electricity and Electrotherapy
  • Esthetic Science and Skin Analysis
  • Facials
  • Hair Removal
  • Makeup
  • Rules, Regulations, and Safety

The Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology works with Pearson VUE to issue this test. For more information on the application process, test dates and locations, or practice exams, visit their website. Once you've completed your exam, your results will be sent back to the Board of Cosmetology for review. When you pass, they will then send you your license!

5. Apply for a job, or start your own salon!

Once you've passed your board exams, congratulations! You can now apply for a job as a licensed esthetician! Jobs you can perform include:

  • Aromatherapy Associate
  • Eyebrow Specialist
  • Eyelash Artist
  • Facial Skin Care Specialist
  • Makeup Artist
  • Spa Treatment Provider
  • Much More!

Jean Madeline students have the opportunity to attend career fairs during their education. If you need help looking for work after that, graduates can use our student resources section for help finding jobs posted by industry professionals.

If you're a go-getter and you have a dream of opening your own salon, you're not alone. Many esthetics graduates have followed the same dream and found great success! Talk to your instructor for help planning, and then start by filling out and submitting this application. If you need details about what laws apply to Pennsylvania salons, refer to the state code and state law. Once you have approval to open your salon to the public, the sky is the limit!
